Workshop Description
This one-day EMDR Refresher is designed for clinicians who have completed basic EMDR training and are looking to sharpen their skills and deepen their clinical confidence. The training offers a comprehensive review of all eight phases of EMDR therapy, with special attention to the EMDR Processing Continuum (EMD, EMDr, and Standard Protocol).

Through a dynamic blend of lecture, live demonstrations with participant volunteers, and interactive group discussion, participants will revisit essential components of EMDR, including case conceptualization, client readiness, Target Sequence Planning, cognitive interweaves, and strategies for working with stuck processing. The workshop will also highlight current EMDR research and practical modifications for working with complex clinical presentations.

Whether you’re returning to EMDR after a break or seeking to refine your practice, this refresher offers an engaging, supportive environment to reconnect with the model and enhance your skills.

Want some help with your toughest cases? Finding yourself stuck, blocked, or looping in EMDR sessions? This workshop will provide skills using Jim Knipe’s EMDR Toolbox and other techniques to help trained EMDR therapists work with stuck clients. Using lecture, live demos/videos, case examples, and practice sessions, we will explore client avoidance and defenses as EMDR targets. Skills taught in this workshop are useful for newly trained EMDR therapists through advanced EMDR therapists!

Workshop Objectives:
After completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Identify client defenses
• Identify Blocking Beliefs in clients using the Blocking Beliefs questionnaire
• Describe preparation skills for addressing defenses and avoidance in EMDR therapy
• Recognize ways to use EMDR with dissociation
• Summarize targeting client avoidance/defenses safely with EMDR therapy techniques
• Discuss EMDR for the positive affect of defenses
• Recognize and target Shame using integration of parts work
• Introduce IFS language of parts work for shame

To be eligible to attend this training, participants must have completed an EMDRIA Approved EMDR basic training course.

Dealing with Avoidance in EMDR Therapy: Blocking beliefs, Defenses, and Getting Unstuck

This workshop will explore client and clinician avoidance in EMDR therapy. Targeting blocking beliefs and defenses with EMDR will be taught, using Jim Knipe’s EMDR Toolbox procedures (see link to purchase book toward the bottom of this page). Clinician avoidance will be addressed through practice sessions with partners in the training to deepen the learning of procedures to use with clients. Workshop will begin with focus on importance of attunement and therapeutic relationship. Affect strengthening exercises and healthy containment skills will be taught. Blocking beliefs will be explored using Jim Knipe’s Blocking Beliefs Questionnaire. Detailed descriptions of common defenses used by clients will be discussed. Specific skills and exercises will be taught to help the clinician target blocking beliefs and defenses in their clinical sessions. Practice sessions will be in pairs as clinicians work on their own avoidance, blocks, and defenses.
